Can a corrupted PSD file be repaired?
Not by Figpea, and be sceptical of anything that says it can repair one for you. Figpea does not rebuild files. What it does is read your PSD independently of Photoshop and tell you the truth about it, which is the step that decides what to try next.
Then how does opening it here help?
Because it separates two situations that look identical from Photoshop's error message. If Figpea opens the file, it was never damaged — something on the Photoshop side was refusing it, and your layers are right there to work with. If Figpea also refuses it, you have a real answer about the file instead of a guess.
What does Figpea do with a file whose header is damaged?
It rejects it, and says why. The PSD reader validates the file header strictly — signature, version, channel count, dimensions, colour depth and colour mode all have to be sound — so it will not guess at damaged structure and hand you something that looks plausible but is wrong. You get one plain-language message naming the file type and the failure instead.
Could opening the file here make it worse?
No. Figpea never writes to the file you opened — it only ever creates new files. The PSD on your disk is byte-for-byte untouched, so trying this costs you nothing.
